  8. jealous and wonders why he didn't think of it first. As for myself, I think you
  9. 2 guys are so prolific that you could whip up some programs in a few days. How
  10. about taking requests or entertaining a wish list? There is always something
  11. that I wish GEOS could do and assume that if I can think it up, then it can be

  26.    This was a big program for me.  I'd never written anything for GEOS that
  27. wrote to disk before.  Turned out to be much, much easier than I'd found it to
  28. be in native C= mode, though still not as easy as on the mainframe IBM at work 
  29. <grin>.
  30.    I think a wishlist would be a great idea.  I sure can't promise to deliver
  31. on any of the wishes, but I think it'd be of value to any GEOS programmer to
  32. have some idea of what the "audience" would like to see.

  43. Pocket Writer has a method of customizing printer drivers with instructions on
  44. creating printer drivers for your specific printer.

  46. I have recently purchased a Diablo P12CQI printer.  I have set it for EPSON
  47. emulation and have tried every printer driver on my GEOS disk (and some I had
  48. down loaded).  None of the outputs were what I want.
  49.  
  50. My printer is capable of 480, 576, 640, 960, and 1920 dots per 8 inches. Since
  51. GEOS prefers a 640 dots per 8 inches, I would like to be able to print that.
  52.  
  53. My purpose of this long message is to explain wy GEOS program wish.  I would
  54. like to see a GEOS application that would ask for specific information and then
  55. produce a print driver.  I am not sure what information would be needed, but I
  56. would think things like ESC < is what causes my print head to return to home
  57. position, Hex code 0A is a line feed, and Hex 0C is a form feed.

  61. got a good printout.

  73. Wells' Print Driver Patcher.  I believe the filename I gave it was PRNPCH.BIN,
  74. but not positive about that.

  76. It's not as easy to work with as the Pocket Writer instructions, but it works.

  78. If you have a QLink subscription, George is usually most willing to help you
  79. work out a custom printer driver.  His screen name there is GHWells.

  92. I had already D/Led the patch program.  It will only work if you get the
  93. specific changes from geoRep GHW (G. Wells).

  95. I have asked GHW for his assistance on the GEOS 128 printer board.  After
  96. several different things, he suggested I send him copies of my interface and
  97. printer manuals.  I think I will end up with a print driver written
  98. specifically for the Diablo P12CQI printer.

  100. The geoRep program seems to be working better for BSW than just using the
  101. various GEOS STEVES.  All of the reps seem to know what they are talking about
  102. (maybe one is lost but he admits his mistakes).

  114.    Much as I hate to admit it, I think you're right about the geoReps.  <grin>
  115.    They've found an elegant solution to BSW's inability to provide proper
  116. customer support at a price acceptable to BSW: get a group of users, and make
  117. them the support team.  It works.  People doing Sysop-type work as a hobby
  118. often seem to work harder, and do a better job, than 9-to-5'ers would.

  126. George Wells is a super nice guy and a geoExpert, too.  He lives not far from
  127. here and I've spoken to him on the phone several times.  I think BSW really
  128. picked a good crew of geoReps (with one notable geoClunker, but that's just my
  129. personal opinion).

  131. The GEOS Steve crew was hopelessly overworked, under-experienced and
  132. under-informed.  The new geoRep program is one of the smartest things BSW has
  133. done in a loooooong time.

  167. Good list.  BTW, this month's print edition of OLT has a review of the HP
  168. DeskJet.  Reading between the lines, it looks like this might just be the
  169. printer technology that obsoletes Laser, even if the DeskJet isn't the printer
  170. that does it.

  201. OK, here are some more ideas for our wish list. GEOnavigator like the MAC
  202. version to automate CIS activity. GEOadveture with graphics and you can click
  203. on points of a compass to move around. GEOwill maker?

  205. A GEOS double-click application that is based on Joe Buckley's GEOWRITE help
  206. screens,
  207.  but would also have graphics. I want one to give directions to our user group
  208. meetings. Menu driven, you could go backwards or forwards, or to the graphics,
  209. and of course print out any or all pages, either on after the other without a
  210. formfeed or side-by-side. I think Joe could whip this up in less than an hour.
  211. He is coming out with a new disk soon and looking for 'fillers'.

  213. GEOtax, GEObbs, GEOhome runs those BSR modules with ICONS, GEOtravel, GEOcad,
  214. GEOart, GEObarcode, GEOatlas, and someday GEOhyperstack? Well, maybe like a

  226. not to replace the ol'Panasonic.

  229. friendly would this be, AND do such critters exist for the DeskJet?

  245.    I have only a vague memory of it, but I think the only PS engine I've seen
  246. advertised for the LaserJet was a card that fit into an XT-class MS-DOS
  247. machine.  I may be misremembering.
  248.    As far as I know, there is no engine for the DeskJet, but if new technology
  249. thermal transfer achieves its' promise, then a PS printer of this type will
  250. exist, sooner or later.  What I've read suggests that the DeskJet is capable of
  251. better output than the Laser, and at a lower price.
  252.    GEOS has always been designed to put images on paper.  While there *is*
  253. something a little unsettling about a printer that costs more than the rest of
  254. the system put together, the bottom line has to be results.  If it's going to
  255. take that printer to achieve the results, and if that system is capable of
  256. achieving them, what's the point of emptying a bank account to buy a '386
  257. machine and PageMaker?   <grin>

  268. The new price of the DeskJet is making my fingers VERY itchy to go out and
  269. purchase such a beast.  Then I remeber that Wordstar 4.0 is the only program
  270. that I have that supports it.  Then I think, "what if" GEOS supported 24 pins
  271. of the DeskJet.  I get all itchy to spend agian.

  281. Well,  I guess it's about time I add my own items to the wishlist.  I think
  282. most of these are do-able, and I might even wind up working on one or two of
  283. the easy ones.

  285.    FontMangler - Combine different point sizes from various fonts into a single
  286. font file, to help overcome the limitation on number of fonts per document.

  288.    Font <-> Photo Album - For building or using some of the special graphics
  289. fonts, a utility to convert fonts to/from Photo Albums
  290.  
  291.    Scrap Resizer - With geoPublish and the geoPaints in GEOS 2.0, various
  292. manipulations can be performed when importing a photo scrap, including
  293. enlarging.  A standalone utility to enlarge and reduce scraps would be useful.

  295.    LaserDisk - geoPublish documents can be converted to PostScript format by
  296. auxiliary Applications on the geoPub disk, but cannot be saved to disk, only
  297. transmitted to a PS-equipped printer via RS-232.  A utility that could write
  298. the PostScript programs to disk, as normal ASCII files would be very useful. 
  299. Not a new idea, but one that hasn't been done yet.

  328.    I like that geoThesaurus idea.  Lessee, make it a DA, run from within
  329. geoWrite, that picks up whatever you've got highlighted, gives you the list of
  330. synonyms, and lets you automatically select one (or not) to replace the
  331. highlighted word.  I like it!!
  332.    I think BSW has contractual obligations with Q that prevent them from doing
  333. Customer Service elsewhere, though clearly some of their geoReps have put in
  334. appearances in various places.
